In the complex and multileveled landscape of European politics, the European Parliament (EP) serves not only as a significant legislative body but also as a strategic haven for national politicians seeking either a higher level of politics or a graceful exit from their national political careers. Although this trend is not unique to Belgian politics, its highly comparative structure and particracy make the trend particularly prevalent among Belgian politicians who often transition (or escape) to the role of MEP as a final step in their political careers. This article explores how Belgian national politicians leverage the EP as a destination for career continuation and a platform for maintaining political influence, whilst discussing the underlying reasons for this trend and its implications for both Belgian and European political spheres.
