During the 2023 G20 summit in New Delhi, US President Joe Biden and his allies announced the plans to build a new rail and shipping corridor, linking India to Europe via the Middle East, with the aims of strengthening economic and political relations between the regions. A Memorandum of Understanding was subsequently signed by the USA, the European Union, India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, and Italy. If constructed, the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) has the potential to significantly impact the global economic landscape. This paper analyses the geopolitical impact of the IMEC in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the Corridor’s influence on international relations, by examining its (geo)political and economic implications as well as the challenges that the IMEC presents.
